- University: University of Edinburgh
- Studied: Economics and Law
- Joined Shell: October 2012
How did you benefit from the Shell Malaysia Scholarship?
The financial support allowed me study overseas, of course. But more importantly being a scholar also taught me important life skills about financial management, meeting targets and expectations.
How would you describe your role in Shell?
I provide economics support to project teams – I carry out economic valuation of technical, commercial and financial data provided by different teams in Shell in order to determine if a proposed project is economically viable.
What do you like most about the job?
It is a challenging job – especially knowing that the work I deliver has an influence on important decisions made within Shell! Therefore getting the job done on time, and done properly, is imperative. In addition, my job also allows me to engage with a variety of different functions in Shell and gives me a comprehensive understanding of the upstream business.
How’s your experience in getting the job?
I attended a Shell Recruitment Day (SRD) event which is one of the most fun job interviews I’ve ever attended. We were given a variety of case studies and scenarios and had to solve them individually and in groups. It provided me with a true sense of what working in Shell would be like.
Things that you can’t live without?
An Internet connection.
Cindy Lora Sagan – Shell scholar currently working as a Development Inspection Engineer with Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis Sdn Bhd
Quick Facts:
- Location: Shell MDS (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.
- University: Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)
- Studies: Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering
- Joined Shell: July, 2011
How did you benefit from Shell Malaysia Scholarship?
The Scholarship gave me a clear sense of responsibility as a student, and at the same time, the freedom to learn and grow in a field that I was passionate about – Mechanical Engineering. There’s a saying that goes ‘’Find a job that you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life’’. For me it was learning about how things work in the world, and having the scholarship to pay for that, the tuition fees and the books and life necessities, I do firmly believe the Scholarship helped me shape and build my character as a student, and as an engineer.
How would you describe your role in Shell?
Currently I’m the Development Inspection Engineer in Shell MDS, Bintulu, which is the world’s first GTL plant. My primary role in the Integrity & Inspection Department is to ensure that what we have in the pipes, stays in the pipes – from planning inspection on piping and equipment, to the execution, interpretation and recommendations for repair. I had a senior colleague tell me once that we are the CSI (yes, the TV show) equivalents of our business!
What do you like most about the job?
I love the fact that my job requires me to think outside the box, and outside under the sun!
How’s your experience in getting the job?
I was recruited during the Shell Recruitment Day (SRD), and honestly speaking, it was the toughest and most exciting interview I have ever been to. The SRD is a series of case studies and exercises (with surprises here and there) that requires you to not only come up with effective solutions, but also to incorporate compromise and teamwork with the other candidates.
My most significant takeback from the whole experience would be that there was not really a competitive atmosphere during the interview, but one that allows you to show the best parts of yourself as a young engineer and as a person.
Things that you can’t live without?
My journal.
Mohd Hairul Adhan Ruzan – Shell scholar currently working as a management accountant currently in his second role in Shell graduate rotation.

- Bachelors’ Degree in Accounting
- Joined Shell : September 2010
Shell to me:
A people-orientated company which focus not only making good business in Malaysia but very courteous and serious about developing local talent to ensure that Malaysia will remain as the heart-land for Shell in the many more years to come. I was very lucky to have been chosen one of the recipient of shell overseas scholarship to purse my degree in Accounting in the UK.
How did you benefit from Shell Scholarship:
Shell has fulfilled my dream to pursue my studies overseas upon receiving Shell overseas sponsorship. It was a life changing experience which I can only be very thankful of. Shell provided full support of financial assistance ~ tuition fees and monthly allowance and yearly home passage throughout my undergraduate study duration.
How would you describe your role in Shell?
I am a Business Finance analyst or rather supply chain analyst which supports Bitumen Supply in the East and Global Sulphur sales which is managed from Singapore. Both Sulphur and Bitumen business classified under Specialties’, which part of Global Commercial Business under shell downstream operation. Due to the nature of the work, I am working virtually with the team in Singapore to support the day to day operations.
My main tasks includes providing accurate Management Information (MI) of Bitumen Supply in the East and Global Sulphur business which includes providing analysis to the management of current costs and margins made on each month. The challenge is on how to keep up with the business on day to day basis virtually, able to use good networking and visualisation skill to be able to strike a good meaningful conversation with the Supply Operations team in Singapore which enable me to translate that into quality and meaningful explanation of the month’s results.
What do you like most about the job?
From the first and second role in Shell, what I like about the job is the challenge to provide robust, meaningful and accurate information of our financial results to the management.
Being in finance, we are the last to be impacted for any decision made by the business, when the business action reflected in our financial results. To get the information, we will need to be able to find the right source of information and key personnel which can provide sufficient information in which we can use in our analysis and put up the stories together. As a consequence of that, I have been able to practice good thinking and networking skills and at the same time now have good understanding of the many business functions from engineering ,operations, HR, HSSE and even IT!.
How’s your experience in getting the job?
As a Shell scholar, I was given the opportunity to undertake Shell assessed internship programme which provide employment with Shell upon graduation. We were given real life job tasks and few projects to be delivered to the business. The good thing about it, I can see real impact of the work I have done to the business and provided me with the much needed network that was useful and very helpful upon joining shell as a staff.
