How did you benefit from the Shell Malaysia Scholarship?

Other than financial assistance, we (Shell scholars!) were invited to engagement sessions with Shell’s top leaders and were given assess to major oil and gas conferences. Through these opportunities, we were exposed to the dynamic world of the oil and gas. Not only were we updated on the key issues in the industry, we were also given an insight in terms of what it takes to be competitive and marketable graduates.

How would you describe your role in Shell?

As a Graduate Project Engineer assigned to the Portfolio Projects, I am to follow the project’s progress development from the design up to execution phase, looking after the interest of the projects from technical to non-technical aspect. During the fabrication phase of the project, I visit the fabrication yards to follow up on the progress and ensure timely delivery. I also go to offshore platforms during the execution period for the hook – up and commissioning phase of the project.

What do you like most about the job?

The challenging and fast pace nature of the job of course! I love it ! It drives me every day to continuously learn and in the same time contribute to the success of the projects. Also, seeing the final result of the projects offshore when it is completed, is simply satisfying and keeps me motivated.

How’s your experience in getting the job?

One word, CHALLENGING! There is a saying that I hold on to : “Nothing good comes easy. If you want something good, you have to work for it!”. Shell has an advanced and prodigious graduate programme for fresh graduates, so it is something we have to work for!

Things you can’t live without?

Ice cream and coffee! and oh, my bed!

How did you benefit from the Shell Malaysia Scholarship?

Shell Malaysia Scholarship provided me the opportunity to pursue the course that I always dreamt of without having financial constraints. Apart from that, frequent Get–To–Know–You  events organized by the Scholarship team with the Shell business leaders opened my eyes to the various opportunities that Shell can offer.

How would you describe your role in Shell?

I joined Shell as a Trainee Operation Engineer under Production Operations skill pool. My role involves managing day – to – day operations field activities and scheduling maintenance, inspection and intervention tasks whilst safeguarding the technical integrity.

What do you like most about the job?

Being able to obtain hands on experiences offshore is the thing that I like the most about my job. I can learn about how gas is extracted from the wells up to the processing facility until the export line. Apart from that, I like how I get to learn from people from different background and level of experiences ranging from the operation technicians, control room operators, engineers and the offshore installation manager (OIM). Besides offshore, I get to be placed onshore and learn how to achieve daily production targets. It is a really good development program!

How’s your experience in getting the job?

I went through the Assessed Internship for 12 weeks during my penultimate year in Curtin. Being assigned to a real life project outside of my background is quite a tough job yet rewarding as it expanded my knowledge and skillsets. It was a very great experience as I learnt how to act under pressure, experienced the working culture in Shell and most of all, pushing my limit. My advice to the future interns is that don’t be intimidated by the project that will be assigned to you because people in Shell are more than willing to help, as long as you ask! Treat the challenges and shortcomings as an opportunity to learn more.

Things you can’t live without?

Family members and close friends and of course my mobile phone!
