Sustainable tourism programme

The Tungog Rainforest eco-camp in Sandakan, Sabah is a community project providing eco-tourism opportunities for the people of Batu Puteh.

official celebration

Located at the Pin Supu Forest Reserve at Batu Puteh-Kinabatangan in Sabah, the Tungog eco-camp serves as a platform to monitor, learn about and protect the surrounding forests of the Lower Kinabatangan Floodplain.

The eco-camp, nestled next to a pristine ox-bow lake some 10 minutes from the Batu Puteh jetty, is expected to provide sustainable livelihood for some 100 young people of Batu Puteh.

The eco-camp offers visitors a place to stay within the natural forest environment, with a particular focus on nature education, eco-tourism and research.

Designed jointly by local youths using the latest eco-friendly design principles and technology, the eco-camp was constructed and will be operated with minimal impact to the environment.

There was no felling of trees during construction with buildings being situated amidst existing vegetation. Construction materials were derived from natural products and sourced from nearby villages. Other basic eco-design principles included minimising energy and water usage. No chemicals were used on site and all wastes were removed from the premises. Noisy prefabrication was done off-site.

The eco-camp will also be a platform to test the latest eco-technology such as solar, composting toilets, alternative energy supply and showcase how this can be incorporated into everyday living. Recycling will also feature prominently in products and equipment used at the camp.

Shell is partnering the local community and Raleigh International in establishing the eco-camp which is a part of a wider sustainable tourism project by WWF Malaysia.
