Speaking at the closing ceremony, Jonathan Jolly, Shell Malaysia government relations senior manager said Shell had been working with its partners for over five decades to create a greater awareness of road safety amongst the young, a key focus area in Shell’s corporate social investment program.

He said, “The programme’s ultimate aim is to reduce accidents and fatalities by raising awareness on road safety in participants who come from schools all over Malaysia.“

He added that nearly 1.3 million people are killed on the road globally every year, another 50 million are injured. “We are working in partnerships to help address this challenge.”

Citing forecasts that the number of cars was expected to triple worldwide by 2050, Jolly said “At Shell, we are constantly finding innovative ways to move more people and goods, safely, cost-effectively and with reduced impact on the environment by Smarter Mobility approach – using smarter products, smarter infrastructure and smarter use.”

Jolly explained that smarter mobility involves providing customers with information and advice to help them make smarter choices and promote good habits, including programmes to promote more efficient driving, and initiatives to improve road safety such as the Shell Traffic Games.

He continued, “As a responsible energy provider, we believe we have a role to play in keeping our roads safe through road safety education.“

Jolly said that while Shell was proud to have educated tens of thousands of young children on road safety since it was launched in 1963 in Sarawak, the company would look at ways to improve its road safety targets for the community including exploring newer and more modern programmes.

STG is run in every division in Sarawak and culminates in a state level final in which the winning schools from each division participate. State level champions go on to represent Sarawak at the national level finals, competing against other states.

STG also runs in every state in Peninsular Malaysia and in every district in Sabah – an average of over 20,000 students a year from throughout Malaysia participate in the programme.
