BETTER WORKABILITY*
With the reduction of asphalt binders’ viscosity at elevated temperatures, the process of storage transfer to production plant, mixing with other components, placement and compaction work at construction site are all improved.
Shell GTL Asphalt Additives, sold as Shell GTL Saraphalt, is a versatile additive polymerised from natural gas via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. It is suitable for high-quality Warm Mix Asphalt applications on roads, highways, bridges and airport runways.
The asphalt additive enhances workability, reduces mixing and paving temperatures, as well as improves process reliability, tensile strength and rutting. It also achieves lower emissions and energy consumption, and improves working conditions by extending road paving season.
Shell GTL Saraphalt has a low viscosity, high-temperature resistance and a relatively high tensile strength ratio, making it ideal for asphalt pavement application in different environments. As a gas-to-liquids (GTL) product, it also contains zero sulphur and is virtually free from nitrogen, aromatics and heavy metals.
With the reduction of asphalt binders’ viscosity at elevated temperatures, the process of storage transfer to production plant, mixing with other components, placement and compaction work at construction site are all improved.
With an enhanced Tensile Strength Ratio (TSR) for asphalt binders, it exceeds the minimum requirement of ASTMD4867 (Standard Test Method for Effect of Moisture on Asphalt Concrete Paving Mixtures).
As a result of improved rutting, oxidation aging, fatigue and fuel resistance that enhances hardness and reduction of temperature susceptibility of the binders, the asphalt is made more durable against poor weather conditions, high-traffic loads and damage contact with fuel.
The reduction of emissions from the asphalt mixture with less fumes, aerosols and high heat exposure help to improve workers’ health and working conditions. The processing at lower temperatures also enables extending paving season into the colder and more temperate season of the year, giving additional time to complete paving projects.
Producing asphalt mixtures with special properties to enable
paving at a lower temperature, Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA)
with Shell GTL Saraphalt offers reduction in CO2 emissions
and lesser energy consumption.
Evaluated and certified by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) National Transportation Product Evaluation Program (NTPEP) for Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) application.
