Road Testing of Shell Premium Fuels and Lubricants

[Scenes of trucks in different countries]

[Voice Over]

Every day, commercial trucks and buses operate for long hours, in demanding start-stop conditions and clocking up exceedingly high mileage. The choice of fuel and lubricant for these vehicles then play a vital role for their efficiency, reliability and overall performance of the fleet company.

[Voice Over]

Hence Shell and ATP set out to demonstrate in real-world conditions, the combined benefits of using Shell’s premium fuel and lubricants for heavy duty engines.

[Text on screen]

Automotive Testing Papenburg (ATP) is one the world’s most modern testing facilities, with over 75 kilometers of test tracks.

[Alastair Smith]

The products on test here at ATP in Papenburg, are the latest generation of Shell diesel with DYNAFLEX technology and that’s known as Shell FuelSave Diesel.

And then being tested alongside the very best in Shell lubricants for heavy duty, which are Shell Rimula and Shell Spirax.

[Alastair Smith]

Testing here is under real-world conditions, representative of heavy-duty fleet operators and will take 17 days and more than 4000 kilometers on the test track here.

17 days and over 4000km of testing

[Scenes of mechanics inspecting the engine]

[Alastair Smith]

Testing has been split into separate phases to look at the contribution of low viscosity, premium lubricants against a standard lubricant, looking in particular at how injector cleanliness, brought about by using a premium diesel fuel, contributes to the power and fuel economy of the engine.

[Scenes of trucks on the testing area and arrival in workshop]

[Ann-Cathrin Bischhoff]

It’s very important to test every time with similar conditions. This means, we have to guarantee, that the driver influence is as low as possible.

Careful test conditions

[Ann-Cathrin Bischhoff]

Therefore, we are using our driver guidance system to make sure the driver keeps the right velocity and also that he accelerates every time like the previous one.

[Ann-Cathrin Bischhoff]

We are very excited that Shell is using our test tracks and also our ATP engineer team for this test.

[Scenes of mechanics inspecting the engine and closeups of the boroscope]

[Alastair Smith]

To examine the inside of an engine, we use a special fibre-optic camera, called boroscope.

[Scenes injectors and injector-holes]

[Alastair Smith]

This allows us to inspect the intake valves, combustion chamber and fuel injector and look for any deposits and the level of cleanliness.

[Scenes of mechanics, inspecting an injector]

[Alastair Smith]

From our customers we know that when carbon deposits build up inside fuel injectors there is an increase in total cost of ownership due to high fuel consumption and more frequent maintenance.

[Scenes of trucks on the testing area]

[Ann-Cathrin Bischhoff]

To describe the test in detail, you can say that we are simulating some city traffic. This means velocities between 0 and 50 kilometers per hour and also some different accelerations and decelerations.

Testing Shell FuelSave Diesel vs regular diesel

[Ann-Cathrin Bischhoff]

We are driving the tests with different fuels. There we compared the Shell Premium Diesel with DYNAFLEX Technology with a normal diesel fuel. During this test is important to see which influence this has on the engines.

[Shots of Shell FuelSave Diesel, Shell Diesel Extra, Shell RIMULA and Shell SPIRAX]

[Markus Bloem]

A company like Shell develops their new products in a laboratory and drives different pre-testings on test-benches. Here at ATP, we are testing these products under real-life conditions and we succeeded to measure the benefits for the customer.

[Shots of staff analyzing]

[Markus Bloem]

Using Shell premium products, I especially noted that we were able to reduce fuel consumption, lower costs and additionally, have an beneficial impact on the environment.

Successful result: Reducing total cost of ownership.

[Ann-Cathrin Bischhoff]

I was very happy that we collaborate with Shell in this test and we grew to a good test team.

[Alastair Smith]

After 17 days testing in Papenburg we have returned here to Hamburg to analyse all of the data and present the results.

Our testing in ATP has shown that Shell diesel with DYNAFLEX technology is able to clean up fuel injectors deposits and reduce fuel consumption under city and urban driving conditions.

Carbon deposits >> higher fuel consumption with regular diesel.

[Text Display]

Cleaned up injectors >> improved fuel economy and more torque with Shell FuelSave Diesel.

[Scenes of trucks going uphill]

[Alastair Smith]

Our results show that Shell FuelSave Diesel can remove fuel injector deposits and give you up to 5.3% more torque and pulling power.

5.28% more load-pulling power

[Scenes of a chemist in a laboratory]

[Alastair Smith]

The winning combination of Shell diesel with DYNAFLEX technology alongside Shell premium lubricants have delivered up to 8.9% reduction in fuel consumption.

Shell’s efficiency package: - Clean-up of injector deposits

  • 5.28% more load-pulling power
  • 8.9% combined fuel economy

[Alastair Smith]

The take-home-message is, that combining these two products results in a reduction in total cost of ownership and reduced running costs for anyone driving a truck.

By testing in an independent test-house, we’ve shown that Shell products work in a real-world scenario, driving on the road, not in a laboratory and that we have seen great response.

What our customers say

ESD SIC ACHIEVES UP TO 5% FUEL AND CO₂ SAVINGS*.

On the advice of OCN, we switched to Shell FuelSave Diesel. The cleaning properties of the fuel are of great importance to us, given the intensive and crucial use of our machines. Equally important are the improved fuel economy and a corresponding reduction in the CO2 emissions we have achieved with Shell FuelSave Diesel*.

Richard Middel, ESD-SIC Director, Netherlands

*Customer statement. As experienced by customer rather than Shell protocols. Compared to regular diesel without fuel economy formula. Customer benefits vary according to type of operations, vehicles, driving conditions and driving style.
