Outstanding Diversity and Work-Life Culture
Shell Business Operations Kuala Lumpur (SBO KL) won the ‘Special Mention Award’ at the Life at Work Awards 2017, which was organised by Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (“TalentCorp”) for undertaking outstanding initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion and work-life integration in the workplace.

Nyon Kam Yew, General Manager of SBO KL received the award from Dato’ Sri Idris Jala, former CEO of the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU) who is also a Member of TalentCorp’s Board of Trustees at the “Future of Work, Workplace & Workforce” Conference 2017, held in Kuala Lumpur on 20th November 2017.
Commenting on the achievement, Nyon said, “The award is a great recognition by the government on our initiatives to continuously promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace. It is a testament of SBO KL’s commitment to being a great place to work whilst continuously driving various diversity and inclusion initiatives to attract, develop and retain its talent.”
SBO KL’s key diversity and inclusion initiatives include:
Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
A professional counselling support service offered for employees with personal problems and work-related problems that may affect their job performance and emotional well-being. EAP was designed to demonstrate care which aligned with Shell’s core values of respecting our people and allowing our employees to perform at their best at work despite their personal or business circumstances.
Female Leadership Programme
A dedicated platform for female talents to upskill personally and professionally through leadership programmmes such as a Mentoring Circle under collaboration of Shell Women’s Action Network (SWAN), Women’s Career Development Programme (WCDP) and Senior Women Connect (SWC) with the aim to support development and accelerate the career journey of female leaders.

Best of Me Programme
A flagship programme called ‘Best of Me’ workshop, which was designed and implemented to sharpen articulation skills, confidence and personal branding amongst the employees. To-date, more than 250 employees have participated in the workshop and improved significantly.
Employee Networks
Value-adding Diversity and Inclusion (D&I programmes) are delivered through employee networks collaboration to engage the community and create diversified workplace. The Diversity Change Agent Network (DCAN) is the first D&I network in Shell which champions the D&I agenda across all spectrums ranging from gender, cultures and disability to micro-behaviours. DCAN actively promotes cultural awareness, volunteerism and conducts lunch & learn sessions covering different D&I themes.
Business Innovation
Business partners are driven to deliver continuous improvements for their people to perform optimally and empower multigenerational collaboration via innovative initiative. For instance, The Winning Team Challenge by Order-to-Cash (OTC) developed a mobile application called ‘ChitChit’ to garner ideas and feedback on various business theme challenges. Transformation Engagement & Development (TED), a programme designed for HR Services to enhance readiness and employability by equipping them with communications and leadership skills to prepare employees for their next role.
The Life at Work Awards by Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad, honour local and multinational organisations in Malaysia that demonstrated innovative D&I strategies and initiatives that enable the employees to better integrate their work-life commitments. The award has attracted more than 30 companies to participate this year. The competition involved both written and video submissions where the written submission carried a 90% weightage while the video that highlights the organisation’s diversity and inclusion initiatives or policies counted for 10% of the overall score. Entries were judged by a panel of distinguished and experienced judges from both private and public sectors.
