Siew Yen’s story

This is the photo-story of SBO KL Production Manager Europe Ng Siew Yen, who is based in Shell’s SBO Cyberjaya Centre in Malaysia. She appreciates the growth and learning opportunities that Shell has afforded her, and loves working in a dynamic environment and with a diverse range of people.

As the SBO KL Production Manager Europe in Cyberjaya, my focus is on ensuring we can deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions for a range of communication needs, from design to digital requirements.

My team works closely with colleagues from around the world to provide brand compliant and high quality production services for our stakeholders. I strongly believe in continuous learning. Working at Shell has provided me with exposure to numerous examples of best practice and has given me the opportunity to liaise with people from a variety of backgrounds. A collaborative and supportive working culture and a varied workforce is incredibly important, and Shell’s focus on diversity is one of the reasons I’m proud to work here.

Siew Yen and some friends in China
Upon joining Shell, I was given the opportunity to participate in an External Relations Foundation Programme in Chengdu, China, to analyse Shell’s business drivers, portfolio and strategy.

This initiative will help us create business value for Shell by building a positive brand reputation through world-class communication and engagement. Aside from this, I was also able to meet interesting colleagues from different countries, which is something I love doing.

Siew Yen and Dato’ Sri Idris Jala
I always look forward to gaining inspiration and lessons from other senior leaders.

We had filmed an interview with Dato’ Sri Idris Jala, who is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Performance Management & Delivery Unit (PEMANDU) for Malaysia. He is a former Malaysian cabinet minister and senior leader at Shell. In our discussion, he shared valuable insights on leadership, which were then cascaded to other Shell colleagues.

In 2016, we celebrated Shell Malaysia’s 125-year anniversary.

It was an exciting year-long campaign, and we had an internal launch to celebrate it with our Shell staff with the theme ‘Fuelling Malaysian Progress’. It was an amazing experience to be part of this significant milestone, and to showcase the achievements and highlights of Shell Malaysia in various mediums.

You can see more of the celebrations in this video

Siew Yen, colleagues, and the Shell Energy Race model
As part of the 125-year celebrations, we visited local universities with an on-ground activity known as the Shell Energy Race.

The main purpose was to engage with the students and to spark conversations about the future of energy. We had a great time educating and inspiring the students on the importance of energy awareness.

Siew Yen with the Shell Toastmaters club
At Shell, we are often encouraged to explore different programmes to enhance our growth and development.

I’m also an active member of the Shell Toastmasters Cyberjaya club, which is a wonderful platform that helps to improve communication and leadership skills. I’m a former Vice-President of Education, and that role helped to increase my confidence in public speaking. Our club has also embarked on an educational programme to teach students in a local school the skills of public speaking.
