Bintulu – In pursuit of delivering positive social outcomes and building strong, lasting relationships with its stakeholders and communities, Shell MDS Malaysia has organised a Defensive Driving Technique workshop for Bintulu taxi drivers under the #ShellSelamatSampai community outreach initiative. In collaboration with the Bintulu resident office and Majlis Keselamatan Jalan Raya Bahagian Bintulu, the workshop took place at ParkCity Everly Hotel, on 13th September 2018.

This workshop which had 50 taxi drivers as participants consisted of Defensive Driving Technique, Anger and Fatigue Management as well as Attitude and Customer Care, aimed to refresh these drivers on road safety, customer care and adopting the right drivers’ attitude.

Besides that, there were also an exhibition and talk by partners – Lembaga Perlesenan Kenderaan Perdagangan Sarawak (LPKP), Jabatan Pengangkutan dan Trafik, Bintulu Development Authority, Majilis Keselamatan Jalanraya (MKNJ), Jabatan Keselamatan Jalanraya (JKJR), Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JKJ) and Polis Di-Raja Malaysia (PDRM). A Helix product efficacy demonstration was also a part of this workshop.

Following the workshop, the taxi drivers will be monitored by LPKP and the Bintulu resident office, in a six-month evaluation process. This assessment will play a big role in the renewal of their licences. Post the evaluation, the graduating taxi drivers will be presented with a certificate of achievement.

“Safety is always our priority at Shell MDS Malaysia. We believe in sharing our safety culture with the community here and have extended our road safety advocacy to taxi drivers in Bintulu to ensure that the local community benefit from this safety intervention,” said Tom Wong, the General Manager of Shell MDS Malaysia.

Shell MDS Malaysia which was commissioned in 1993, celebrated its 25th anniversary recently. According to Tom, this achievement would not have been made a reality without the strong support from the Sarawak State Government. As part of the plant’s objective to play a part in the growth and development of the town and the community of Bintulu, Shell MDS Malaysia realises the need to advocate safety leadership and deliver strategic road safety initiatives to mitigate the social impact due to recklessness and the wrong attitude on the road.

“We believe that this workshop will be able to create awareness on the importance of road safety that comprises defensive and ethical driving, whilst being equipped with the right knowledge on safety measures. This awareness will help instil the proper understanding of road safety to the taxi drivers.”

Through this workshop, Shell MDS Malaysia would like to bring improvement to the driving habits and etiquette of the Bintulu taxi drivers. The plant believes that by opening this avenue for them, it will be able to assist them in providing better services and ensuring a safe and satisfying journey for the Bintulu community.”

According to Tom, besides the Defensive Driving Technique workshop for taxi drivers, there were also other programmes under the #ShellSelamatSampai flagship; one of it being the #ShellSelamatSampai School Challenge. In this initiative, 20 secondary schools nationwide compete annually to implement road safety intervention projects that benefit the school and the surrounding communities.

“SMK Bintulu and SMK Kidurong are the two Bintulu schools that emerged as national champions, respectively, in the #ShellSelamatSampai School Challenge for the past two years in 2016 and 2017,” stated Tom.

Shell Malaysia has been a strong advocate for the improvement of road safety culture amongst Malaysians since 1957. #ShellSelamatSampai was established in 2016 with the aim to comprehensively drive road safety awareness and behavioural change among motorcyclists and youth, who contribute to the highest fatality rate in road crashes in Malaysia.
