Shell Malaysia warns the public of SMS scams and fake website
Shell Malaysia has been made aware that text messages (SMS) are being sent to mobile phone users informing them that they have won prizes from the Company.
It has come to Shell's attention that Short Messaging System (SMS) text messages are being sent to people claiming that they have won prizes from Shell Malaysia. Typically the sms will tell the SMS recipient that they have won a cash prize from Shell.
Please note that Shell Malaysia does NOT use text messages to communicate to contest winners. Members of the public are advised not respond to such messages.
All winner announcements for contests run by Shell are advertised in the media and available on the Shell Malaysia website www.shell.com.my. Winners will also receive a phone call informing them of their win by a Shell appointed agency. At which point, Shell's agency will need to verify the winner's name, NRIC and address for the prizes to be couriered to the winners. Shell does NOT require any bank account numbers, etc. If ever in doubt, please do check the website to ensure that you are indeed a Shell contest winner.
It has also come to our attention that there has been a number of websites claiming to be operated by Shell Malaysia. Typically, although this is not always the case, these websites end with the suffix .co.nf.

Clarification on "DO NOT PUMP FULL TANK OF PETROL" Email
Clarification on the e-mail scam
You may be aware of an e-mail in circulation now on the internet, alleging that Shell and other petroleum retailing companies and their retail operators are cheating motorists and customers by tampering with the fuel pump equipment at retail stations nationwide.
The email also alleges that motorists and customers refuelling at stations receive less petrol in their vehicle tanks as a result of the tampering with litre gauges at the fuel pumps.
Shell Malaysia would like to assure all customers and motorists refuelling at Shell retail stations nationwide that the Company conducts full investigations into allegations of illegal business practices - an allegation which we take very seriously.
All filling nozzles(spouts)have a built in cut off device that is intended to reduce the possibility of customers being splashed with fuel during filling. This device works by sensing the pressure coming out of the vehicle's petrol tank.
As the tank gets fuller the pressure gets higher in the filling neck of the car and this is sensed by a valve in the nozzle which closes the flow. The hose and nozzle still hold fuel so there is no draining back to the stations' underground tanks.
The metering of the fuel takes into account the amount of product in the hose and nozzle at the start and finish of the transaction so that the customer only pays for what is delivered into the tank. All pump equipment have also been checked and tested and found to be properly calibrated in full compliance with all local regulations, including those of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs. In fact, all pumps are calibrated annually and sealed by the Weights & Measures Department of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs.
If you have received such an e-mail or have been asked about it, or have been approached for clarification and confirmation on this matter, please be informed that Shell Malaysia categorically denies these allegations and considers the circulation of the e-mail in question as malicious and slanderous to the reputation and business practice of the Company.
If you know of anyone who is circulating the e-mail in question and/or spreading rumours regarding the Company's reputation, products and services - please inform us immediately. The Company will not hesitate to report such conduct to the Authorities and will take legal action against any such persons.
Thank you for your support, understanding and cooperation.

False Shell 'Safety News' circulating online
It has come to the attention of Shell Malaysia that there is an email, allegedly from Shell, warning against use of mobile phones and the dangers of static electricity at retail stations.
We wish to clarify that the said e-mail to is not a bona fide communication from Shell. This email has been circulating on the Internet for some time now. We cannot vouch for the events it describes, or the source of the email.
We are aware that there have been reports of fires or small explosions, including some at service stations, when a mobile phone was present. We understand that, in most instances, there is still not conclusive evidence of the ignition source.
We do not wish to speculate on possible linkage of any specific incident to mobile phone use. Although there have been a number of studies, there is no conclusive and generally accepted proof that all mobile phones are safe to use in potentially explosive environments.
We consider that the risk from the use of mobile phones on a retail site, particularly in sections away from the refueling area and tank vents, to be low, but cannot be totally ruled out. In such circumstances we have adopted a precautionary approach.
The use of mobile phones while refueling a vehicle is also discouraged because it may divert concentration and lead to possible spills and accidents. A number of mobile phone manufacturers recommend that their phones are not used in areas with potentially explosive atmospheres because there are static electricity issues not associated with cell phones. -
Shell Citibank Credit Card Rebate Structure
It has come to the attention of Shell and Citibank that there may be some misunderstanding over the rebate structure of the Shell Citibank Credit Card.
We would like to take this opportunity to provide some clarification on this matter.
The rebates are based on two tiers. Customers may earn rebates, whether they have a carry forward balance or otherwise. Should customers not have any carry forward balance, they will still earn rebates of 2.5% on Shell fuel and 0.75% on other purchases on the Shell Gold Card, or 1.5% on Shell fuel and 0.5% on other expenses on the Shell Classic Card.
With carried forward balance (last month statement balance less this month payment ) of RM4,000.00 on Shell Gold Card, the rebate doubles to 5% on Shell fuels and 1.5% on other purchases. Similarly, for carried forward balance of more than RM2,000.00 on Shell Classic Card, rebate doubles to 3% and 1% respectively.
We hope that it is clear that regardless of whether the customer has a carry forward balance or not, if a customer uses the Shell Citibank Credit Card, they will be rewarded with more savings on Shell fuels compared to their existing card.
The Shell Citibank credit card is designed to help all customers, including those with carry forward balance, ease their monthly Shell fuel bills.
At Citibank and Shell, we believe in providing our customers with product choices that most suit their lifestyles and credit needs.
Should you have any further queries or concerns on the Shell Citibank Credit Card, please do not hesitate to contact either the Citibank Customer Service Centre at 03- 2383 0000 or the Shell Customer Service Centre at 1-300-88-1808.

Shell Malaysia Warns Public of Recruitment Fraud
This is an important notice on fraudulent communications that have been made to members of the public which are purported to be on behalf of Companies within the Shell Group ('Shell').
There have been recent incidents that have occurred with organisations falsely pretending to recruit on behalf of Shell or by people claiming to work for, or be affiliated to, Shell. These propositions notify individuals of the position offered with the company and refers to a purported application made or post advertised. The letter also describes expenses to be reimbursed including for visa or work permit for expatriate postings with a Shell Company.
Please note that these communications are fraudulent. They do not originate from Shell nor are they associated with Shell's recruitment process. Shell (nor any of the organisations that recruit on our behalf) never ask for any money or payments from applicants, at any point in the recruitment process. All individuals who are successful in gaining an offer of employment from Shell, whether directly or indirectly, are always required to go through a formal recruitment process.
Salient points of such communications are that they come from non-Shell e-mail addresses (e.g. from a yahoo.com address); the use of English is poor; at some stage, money is requested. We recommend that you do not respond to unsolicited business propositions and/or offers from people with whom you are unfamiliar. Do not disclose your personal or financial details to anyone you do not know. If you receive such proposals, we would advise you to contact your local police and provide them with all information you may have from the senders (email addresses, phone/fax details, etc.).
