What brings you here today?

[Mahirah]
I stopped by to get something to eat and drink. I didn’t have breakfast.

[Interviewer]
What are you up to today?

[Mahirah]
I’m going the hospital. I’m a fresh graduate. I just finished medical school.

[Interviewer]
Tell us about your ambitions.

[Mahirah]
In terms of what I want to pursue? Cardiology is high on my list. I’ve always been very interested in the heart, how it beats and keeps you alive. Both of my parents are doctors. I’ve been surrounded with the idea of doing medicine my entire life.

[Interviewer]
What do your parents mean to you?

[Mahirah]
The world, I suppose. They’ve given me everything. They’ve made me the person I am today. I can relate to a lot of people. I don’t see colour, to be honest. I think everyone is the same.

[Interviewer]
Are you Indian, a Malay or a Malaysian?

[Mahirah]
A Malaysian, for sure. I think that as a Malaysian, you don’t live a race. You live the culture. I still dream of working abroad. Seeing how other people live. But let’s be honest, I’m always going to come back here. This is where my heart is.
