UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MALAYSIA EMERGES NATIONAL WINNER OF #ShellSelamatSampai VARSITY CHALLENGE 2025
Kuala Lumpur – Shell’s road safety programme for tertiary education students, #ShellSelamatSampai Varsity Challenge crowned Team Soft Shell Crab from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia as the grand winner for 2025, in an event today, which was officiated by Yang Berhormat Tuan Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport Malaysia.
This challenge which is themed Innovate! Captivate! Save Lives! is open to all university and college students in Malaysia and is aimed at empowering youth to incorporate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in proposing innovative solutions to mitigate road safety issues.
“Too many lives are lost each year to preventable road incidents caused by reckless behaviour and a lack of awareness. As a community, we have a shared responsibility to drive change and advocate for safer roads. At Shell, we are committed to cultivating a strong road safety culture among young people by inspiring them to develop creative solutions and take proactive roles in promoting safety within their communities,” shared Siti Sulaiman, Country Chair of Shell Malaysia and Senior Vice President Upstream Malaysia.
The winning team consisting of Samin Sarwat, Tanhim bin Jashim, Huzaifa Saoman and Tanveer Ahmad came up with a project called CarBuddy. This is an AI-powered app that tackles Malaysia’s deadliest hidden road risk—microsleep accidents. Using smartphone or in-car cameras, it tracks drivers’ eyes and facial cues to spot drowsiness early and give gentle alerts before microsleep strikes. Affordable and accessible for all drivers, CarBuddy could cut accidents by half—saving 500 lives and RM4.1 billion each year.
Team Soft Shell Crab from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia was one of the five finalist teams which competed against students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), UCSI College, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU).
“Participating in the Shell #ShellSelamatSampai programme has truly transformed our approach towards tackling road safety challenges. The exposure to innovative tools and strategic problem-solving skills has empowered our team to design and implement solutions, which we believe can make a real difference in reducing road accidents. We are truly grateful for Shell’s support throughout this journey and are excited to empower wider community engagement, encouraging others to adopt and amplify our project’s impact on safer roads,” shared Team Soft Shell Crab, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
The 2025 grand finale was judged by a panel of distinguished judges comprising of Mr. Harnamdav Singh, High Risk Transport Advisor, Shell; Ir. Mohd Fairuz bin Izani, Deputy Director of Automotive Engineering Division, Road Transport Department Malaysia (JPJ); Associate Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Siti Zaharah binti Ishak, Director-General, Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS); Wan Noor Sheila binti Mior Sharifuddin, Principal Assistant Director, Department of Higher Education (JPT) and Mr. Gan Yong Li, Digital Director and Managing Director, GYL Media Services Sdn Bhd (PanduLaju).
Shell’s road safety journey in Malaysia began over six decades ago in 1957. Over time, the company’s road safety programme evolved to working very closely with government stakeholders to innovate and find impactful ways to help build a road safe culture among the community. Under the road safety programme called #ShellSelamatSampai, the Varsity Challenge was introduced in 2017. It is aimed to empower tertiary education students to help find solutions in mitigating road safety issues.
Over the years, #ShellSelamatSampai Varsity Challenge has contributed towards nurturing brilliant young minds across Malaysia to propose out of the box ideas to help improve the road safety conditions.

All forward-looking statements contained in this announcement are expressly qualified in their entirety by the cautionary statements contained or referred to in this section. Readers should not place undue reliance on forward-looking statements. Additional risk factors that may affect future results are contained in Shell plc’s Form 20-F and amendment thereto for the year ended December 31, 2024 (available at www.shell.com/investors/news-and- filings/sec-filings.html and www.sec.gov). These risk factors also expressly qualify all forward-looking statements contained in this announcement and should be considered by the reader. Each forward-looking statement speaks only as of the date of this announcement, September 30, 2025. Neither Shell plc nor any of its subsidiaries undertake any obligation to publicly update or revise any forward-looking statement as a result of new information, future events or other information. In light of these risks, results could differ materially from those stated, implied or inferred from the forward-looking statements contained in this announcement.
Shell’s net carbon intensity
Also, in this announcement we may refer to Shell’s “net carbon intensity” (NCI), which includes Shell’s carbon emissions from the production of our energy products, our suppliers’ carbon emissions in supplying energy for that production and our customers’ carbon emissions associated with their use of the energy products we sell. Shell’s NCI also includes the emissions associated with the production and use of energy products produced by others which Shell purchases for resale. Shell only controls its own emissions. The use of the terms Shell’s “net carbon intensity” or NCI is for convenience only and not intended to suggest these emissions are those of Shell plc or its subsidiaries.
Shell’s net-zero emissions target
Shell’s operating plan and outlook are forecasted for a three-year period and ten-year period, respectively, and are updated every year. They reflect the current economic environment and what we can reasonably expect to see over the next three and ten years. Accordingly, the outlook reflects our Scope 1, Scope 2 and NCI targets over the next ten years. However, Shell’s operating plan and outlook cannot reflect our 2050 net-zero emissions target, as this target is outside our planning period. Such future operating plans and outlooks could include changes to our portfolio, efficiency improvements and the use of carbon capture and storage and carbon credits. In the future, as society moves towards net zero emissions, we expect Shell’s operating plans and outlooks to reflect this movement. However, if society is not net zero in 2050, as of today, there would be significant risk that Shell may not meet this target.
Forward-Looking non-GAAP measures
This announcement may contain certain forward-looking non-GAAP measures such as adjusted earnings and divestments. We are unable to provide a reconciliation of these forward-looking non-GAAP measures to the most comparable GAAP financial measures because certain information needed to reconcile those non-GAAP measures to the most comparable GAAP financial measures is dependent on future events some of which are outside the control of Shell, such as oil and gas prices, interest rates and exchange rates. Moreover, estimating such GAAP measures with the required precision necessary to provide a meaningful reconciliation is extremely difficult and could not be accomplished without unreasonable effort. Non-GAAP measures in respect of future periods which cannot be reconciled to the most comparable GAAP financial measure are calculated in a manner which is consistent with the accounting policies applied in Shell plc’s consolidated financial statements.
