Frequently asked questions

Learn more about telematics and how you can combine vehicle data with fuel card data for better fleet management insights. If your question isn’t answered below, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team.

What is a telematics box?

A telematics box is a small box (about the size of a pack of cards) that usually sits on or behind the dashboard. It’s the hardware that collects the data from your vehicle, allowing you to benefit from live tracking and instant insights into your fleet’s performance.

How do telematics boxes work?

Telematics boxes use telecommunication technology to locate, track and monitor vehicles. The information gathered by the telematics box is transferred via mobile internet to a secure server in the cloud that you can log in to via a web browser.

What information does a telematics box capture?

This depends on your provider and your business needs, but common data points include speed, mileage, location and fuel data. As for Shell’s offering, you can track fuel spend, locate drivers in near real-time and monitor driver performance against set criteria to correct inefficient driving habits.

How to install a telematics box?

Our telematics box is universal – it will fit almost any vehicle – and it is easy to install. Installation time varies but our trained engineers will get you set up as quickly as they can with minimum disruption to your business.

How much does the solution cost?

Shell’s Telematics solution has a range of prices that reflect the data bundle you choose. We charge an ongoing monthly fee which covers the cost of the service and the on-board device. Please contact a member of the team for our latest pricing.

Can I get a free trial?

The Shell Telematics solution is a mature hardware and software product that delivers immediate value upon simple implementation. If you believe a trial period is necessary, Shell can support you. Please contact a member of the team to discuss options.

What if my business needs change?

Your business may grow, shift in a new direction, or need to comply with new regulations. We know that flexibility is important for our customers, so our platform makes it easy to add new features to your solution over time. If you’d like to discuss a new business requirement, simply get in touch with your Shell Account Manager.

Will I need expensive computer hardware?

Not at all. All you need is a computer with an internet connection, or even a phone. The only hardware is the on-board device which is very easy to install.

I need a simple solution – how technical is the software?

Our user-interface is highly intuitive – it’s been designed to make it easy to find what you need on the Shell Telematics dashboard.

How does Shell handle data privacy?

Our data is encrypted using SSL encryption similar to those used by banks. The customer defines who has access to their database and what they have access to within it. Our employees only access databases for troubleshooting purposes and this is on the approval of the customer. To ensure complete transparency and accountability, all access into a customer database is audited and stored indefinitely within the database audit log for the customer to see. Please review our security policy guide for more detailed information.

We would like to inform you about the personal data collected about you by a company or companies within the Shell group of companies (‘Shell’), for which purposes and your rights in this respect. Shell has adopted Binding Corporate Rules (PDF, 327 kB)

which provide a privacy compliance framework which has been approved by the Dutch Data Protection Authority such that Shell companies are able to lawfully transfer personal data to other companies within the Shell group in compliance with EU data protection law. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns related to the processing of your personal data – contact details are provided in the relevant Privacy Notice from the Shell country website for your location.

My drivers aren’t convinced. How can I reassure them?

It’s quite common for drivers to feel like bringing in a telematics solution means they aren’t trusted. Explaining your reasons and helping them to understand all the benefits should help get them on board. Making your business safer, more efficient and more sustainable are valid reasons to bring in new technology, and most people would agree that cutting paperwork is a good thing!

Can telematics make driving less stressful?

Telematics systems can be a great way to remove work-related distractions from a driver’s routine by providing reactive schedules and managing client expectations. Taking this responsibility away from a driver is a great way to help reduce stress levels behind the wheel. Data on driving behaviour also gives an opportunity to conduct coaching tailored to the specific driver’s needs which can empower drivers and increase their engagement levels.

How can telematics help to cut out unexpected vehicle downtime?

Fleet vehicles are put through a great deal of stresses and strains over time, and breakdowns and unplanned maintenance are a key factor for productivity and profit. Our telematics solution helps by giving you timely information to carry out proactive repairs.
