GTL products are colourless, odourless liquid hydrocarbons of very high quality that have very low levels of impurities like sulphur, aromatics and nitrogen.
The end products produced by Shell MDS contain almost none of the impurities – sulphur, aromatics and nitrogen – that are found in crude oil, which means that they are cleaner and safer for us and for the environment.

Shell pioneered the Fischer-Tropsch gas-to-liquids (GTL) technology in the world’s first full scale GTL plant of its kind in Bintulu, Malaysia, achieving commercial production in 1993.

Fischer-Tropsch technology is a key component of the Gas-To-Liquids process to produce Shell GTL products.
Shell GTL waxes, marketed under the brand name Shel GTL Sarawax, are specialty waxes characterised by high linearity and narrow carbon number distribution. These properties make them ideal for a wide range of applications, including hot melt adhesives, PVC lubricants, printing inks, rubber and tyres, candles, personal care products, and packaging materials.
Shell GTL Drilling Base Fluids are innovative, non-toxic, multi-application synthetic drilling base fluids derived from natural gas. Our base fluids are at the forefront in meeting drilling demands and challenges of the future in the most environmentally-friendly and safe manner – from scorching desert to subarctic temperatures, from deep water to high-temperature wells.
Shell GTL Saraline 185V is a premium-quality drilling fluid suitable for use in wide range of drilling applications. Shell GTL Sarapar 147 is a premium-quality drilling fluid suitable for use in shallow water applications and high-temperature high-pressure wells. Shell GTL Saraline 200 is a premium-quality drilling fluid suitable for use in onshore and offshore drilling applications. Shell GTL Saraline LV-B is a premium-quality drilling base fluid with superior physical properties and benign HSE profile making it ideal for deep water, extended reach and cold climate drilling applications.
Light and Heavy Detergent Feedstock, Kerosene, Naphtha.
Shell GTL Fuel is an alternative fuel for use in diesel engines, which can lower local emissions (e.g. particulate matter, NOx, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide).
Shell GTL Fuel is used in existing heavy-duty diesel vehicles without modifications.
