From April 29th to May 2nd 2019, Make the Future Live Malaysia and Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2019 took place at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. MtF Live Malaysia kicked off on 29 April under a splendid weather, with the Malaysia Sky Pathway launch and Shell Eco-marathon opening ceremony. 108 student teams across 18 countries in the region participated in the 10th Shell Eco-marathon Asia competition that came full-circle back to where it was first held in 2010, challenging bright young student minds to design and build ultra-energy-efficient cars, and race them in competition out on the tracks.

The event engaged and delighted more than 2,400 participants (customers, partners, government stakeholders, students, staff, media) and drew almost 32 million impressions across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter through event specific content and videos. In the Mileage Challenge, Team RMUTP Racing from Thailand achieved the best mileage withan equivalent of 1,546.9 kilometres on a litre of Ethanol with their Prototype car, the equivalent of driving from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Bangkok, Thailand. The 3 winning teams from Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam went on to London for the Drivers World Championship finale in July.

We believe that by working together we can transform lives, bringing more and cleaner energy to communities, everywhere. We collaborate with inventors, local communities, governments, business and engaged citizens to transform lives by putting bright energy ideas into action.

In 2019, Malaysia will host its first Make the Future Live event featuring Shell Eco-marathon Asia, as part of the global Make the Future Live calendar. To be hosted at at Sepang International Circuit, Kuala Lumpur, the Shell Eco-marathon Asia competition comes full-circle back to where it was first held in 2010, and celebrates its 10th year of challenging bright young student minds to design and build ultra-energy-efficient cars, and race them in competition out on the tracks.

From April 29 to May 2 over 100 teams from all over Asia and the Middle East will test their self-built energy-efficient cars in the Shell Eco-marathon Mileage Challenge, to see who can go the farthest using the least amount of energy.

Shell Eco-marathon Asia returns to Malaysia in its 10th year

Shell Eco-marathon can be traced back to 1939, to a Shell research laboratory in the United States and started as a friendly wager between scientists to see who could get the most miles per gallon from their vehicle. The winner of that contest barely achieved 50 mpg (21 km/l). These humble origins inspired what is now a global programme of competitions. In 1985 in France, Shell Eco-marathon as we know it today was born. In April 2007, Shell Eco-marathon Americas was launched in the United States, and in 2010, the inaugural Shell Eco-marathon Asia kicked off in Malaysia.

Malaysia hosted Shell Eco-marathon Asia from 2010 until 2013. In 2014, the event moved to a street circuit in Manila, Philippines, which hosted the event until 2016. Shell Eco-marathon Asia then moved to Singapore at the Make the Future Festival from 2017 to 2018. This 2019, in its 10th year, Shell Eco-marathon Asia returns to the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at Make the Future Live Malaysia.

What is Make the Future Live?

Make the Future Live is a platform for conversations, collaboration and innovation towards a lower-carbon energy future.

Taking place around the world as multi-day events, Make the Future Live is a year-round programme that brings together governments, businesses, entrepreneurs and students to unite around the global energy challenge: more energy and less CO2 emissions.

For 2019, the core global programme comprises:

  1. Thought leadership: global energy challenges and digital transformation with the objective to cement Shell as thought-leader and thought-partner in global energy challenges.
  2. Real world efficiency: shifting the focus of Shell Eco-marathon from purely competition, to the application in real-life and better linking to our businesses and the energy transition.

When is Make the Future Live Malaysia, and where will it be held?

Make the Future Live Malaysia, featuring Shell Eco-marathon Asia, will be held on 29 April to 2 May, at the South Paddock, Sepang International Circuit.

What’s different this year?

Although it has delivered demonstrable value year-on-year, there is an ongoing effort for continuous improvement and there was a total reboot of the programme, to think smarter to deliver more with less. There is a step-change in approach, from the confined walls of an event-based programme (attendees) to the infinite possibilities of a content-based programme (audience), strengthening value to our brand and businesses.

Beginning this year, all Make the Future Live events around the world will no longer be focused on generating high footfall of the general public, and therefore the large experiential zone at past Make the Future events, such as in Singapore or London, is no longer a requirement. Make the Future Live will instead be focused on a small footfall of targeted, engaged audiences like governments, businesses, entrepreneurs and students.

Why do we host Make the Future Live?

Make the Future Live is a key element in driving the Shell Malaysia country priorities – it creates growth opportunities by positioning Shell as a thought leader and willing collaborator in the energy transition; showcases Shell Malaysia and its importance to the Group and the region; and drives and supports Malaysian university participation in Shell Eco-marathon.

What’s in Make the Future Live Malaysia?

There are two core programmes in Make the Future Live Malaysia – the Sky Pathway thought leadership activity, incorporating a Shell and partner showcase, and Shell Eco-marathon Asia, a mileage competition, which encompasses a local event called Shell Eco-marathon Access.

What is Sky Pathway?

Sky Pathway is an offshoot of Shell’s Sky Scenario, which illustrates a technically possible but challenging pathway for society to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. While Sky Scenario considered the global energy system as a whole, Sky Pathway will focus solely on Malaysia.

We will host an afternoon of dialogue as the official project kick-off, with guest of honour Yeo Bee Yin, Malaysian Minister of Energy, Science, Environment, Technology & Climate Change.

Explore how the future might look like at www.shell.com/skyscenario.

What is Shell Eco-marathon Asia?

In 2019, Shell Eco-marathon Asia

will celebrate its tenth year and return to its inaugural venue in host country Malaysia. It is a unique global programme for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) students to design and build ultra-energy-efficient cars, and then take them out on the track in competition.

There are two key competition types:

  • The Mileage Challenge – competing to see who can get around laps of the track using the least amount of energy.
  • Shell Eco-marathon Drivers’ World Championship Qualifier – matching the proven energy-efficiency of their car, with the strategy, skill and speed of the driver to see who crosses the finish line first, without running out of their tiny allocation of energy.

Participating teams will come from Australia, Brunei Darussalam, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam and of course, Malaysia.
