Shell Eco-marathon is one of the world’s leading energy efficiency competition programmes where school and varsity students are challenged to design, build and test their energy-efficient cars on track. Recognising the value Shell Eco-marathon offers to students, Shell Malaysia with the support from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) and the Department of Higher Learning, Student Development, Ministry of Education, embarked on Shell Eco-marathon Access (SEM Access), a platform for future participating universities, seasoned teams, alumni and business partners to come together to discuss, design and decide on how to shape the future of energy together.

Shell Eco-marathon
Shell Eco-marathon is a unique global programme, for science, technology, engineering and maths students to design and build ultra-energy-efficient cars, and then take them out on the track in competition.
How does it relate to MTF Live, Malaysia?
SEM Access is a programme designed to drive and support Malaysian university participation in Shell Eco-Marathon by strengthening the competition’s eco-system in Malaysia. The main intent is to get wider involvement of like-minded companies, government and universities to be part of the eco-system.

What is the programme timeline / activities?
The Shell Eco-marathon Access programme was introduced during the Make The Future Live Malaysia event in April 2019. At this event, the MoU exchange between Shell Malaysia and the Universities were supported and witnessed by the Dr Zaid bin Omar, Director of Student Development, Ministry of Higher EducationThe capstone pilot and MoUs were developed with the support of MoHE.
It was launched on the 12th of November 2019, officiated by Yang Berhormat, Dr. Ong Kian Ming, Deputy Minister, Ministry of International Trade & Industry and Datuk Iain Lo, Chairman, Shell Malaysia together with Dr. Zaid bin Omar, Director of Student Development, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education.
On the 12th of November 2019, we also held the first inaugural ‘Make Your Future’ pitch where 9 teams pitched their ideas to corporate partners to garner support.
On 13th November 2019 the Shell Eco-marathon Access programme held its first workshop facilitated by Shell Eco-marathon Asia Technical Director, Colin Chin.
January 2020 will see ‘Make Your Future Pitch 2.0’ to garner more support from like-minded partners to support Malaysian Teams participating in Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2020.
