Reducing CO2 emissions and black smoke

Reducing CO2 emissions and black smoke

Our most advanced fuels for heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, Shell FuelSave Diesel with DYNAFLEX Technology1, is designed to help lower CO2 emissions2 and black smoke3. Their dual detergent formulation works to clean up injectors from carbon deposits and prevent further build-up, enabling improved engine efficiency and less wasted energy2.

“On the advice of OCN, we switched to Shell FuelSave Diesel. The cleaning properties of the fuel are of great importance to us, given the intensive and crucial use of our machines. Equally important are the improved fuel economy (of up to 5%) and a corresponding reduction in the CO2 emissions we have achieved with Shell FuelSave Diesel4.”

Tackling local air quality

Tackling local air quality

Shell GTL Fuel is derived from natural gas, it is a cleaner-burning alternative fuel to diesel and can help improve local air quality5. It helps reduce emissions of local air pollutants, especially in urban areas and closed operating zones, hence is suitable for use in public transportation vehicles, inland marine vessels, construction machinery, and power generation equipment.

In line with the Dutch aviation sector’s ambition of emissions-free ground operations by 2030, Shell GTL Fuel is now used in around 4,000 vehicles at Schiphol airport.

Every airline company wants its aircraft to be in the air as much as possible," says Gerwin te Hennepe of KLM Equipment Services (KES), responsible for the maintenance of most of the moving ground equipment at Schiphol. “The turnaround time, the period that a device stays on the ground, must be as short as possible. Ground transport plays a key role in this. Loading, unloading, cleaning, supplying and refueling is a sophisticated logistical operation with a scale that is hard to imagine for an outsider6.

Shell GTL Fuel burns more cleanly and so produces lower local emissions compared to conventional crude oil-derived diesel.

Using biofuels

Transport companies are increasingly looking to use biofuels in their fleet operations to help reduce environmental impact and meet emission regulations. A consideration when using biodiesel is its susceptibility to water contamination and microbial growth. Shell FuelSave Diesel with DYNAFLEX Technology7 is designed to help keep fuel more stable in the presence of bio-components, thus increasing vehicle and equipment reliability8. They contain a special dehazer that promotes good water separation and reduced microbial growth8.

Proper storage and handling of biofuels is important for smooth operations. We can help with housekeeping advice based on Shell’s longstanding experience with storing, blending, and handling biofuels to supply customers around the world.
