From April 29th to May 2nd 2019, Make the Future Live Malaysia and Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2019 took place at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. MtF Live Malaysia kicked off on 29 April under a splendid weather, with the Malaysia Sky Pathway launch and Shell Eco-marathon opening ceremony. 108 student teams across 18 countries in the region participated in the 10th Shell Eco-marathon Asia competition that came full-circle back to where it was first held in 2010, challenging bright young student minds to design and build ultra-energy-efficient cars, and race them in competition out on the tracks.

The event engaged and delighted more than 2,400 participants (customers, partners, government stakeholders, students, staff, media) and drew almost 32 million impressions across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter through event specific content and videos. In the Mileage Challenge, Team RMUTP Racing from Thailand achieved the best mileage withan equivalent of 1,546.9 kilometres on a litre of Ethanol with their Prototype car, the equivalent of driving from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Bangkok, Thailand. The 3 winning teams from Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam went on to London for the Drivers World Championship finale in July.

We believe that by working together we can transform lives, bringing more and cleaner energy to communities, everywhere. We collaborate with inventors, local communities, governments, business and engaged citizens to transform lives by putting bright energy ideas into action.

In 2019, Malaysia will host its first Make the Future Live event featuring Shell Eco-marathon Asia, as part of the global Make the Future Live calendar. To be hosted at at Sepang International Circuit, Kuala Lumpur, the Shell Eco-marathon Asia competition comes full-circle back to where it was first held in 2010, and celebrates its 10th year of challenging bright young student minds to design and build ultra-energy-efficient cars, and race them in competition out on the tracks.

From April 29 to May 2 over 100 teams from all over Asia and the Middle East will test their self-built energy-efficient cars in the Shell Eco-marathon Mileage Challenge, to see who can go the farthest using the least amount of energy.

Learn about Make the Future

Shell Eco-marathon Asia returns to Malaysia in its 10th year

Shell Eco-marathon can be traced back to 1939, to  a Shell research laboratory in the United States and started as a friendly wager between scientists to see who could get the most miles per gallon from their vehicle. The winner of that contest barely achieved 50 mpg (21 km/l). These humble origins inspired what is now a global programme of competitions. In 1985 in France, Shell Eco-marathon as we know it today was born. In April 2007, Shell Eco-marathon Americas was launched in the United States, and in 2010, the inaugural Shell Eco-marathon Asia kicked off in Malaysia.

Malaysia hosted Shell Eco-marathon Asia from 2010 until 2013. In 2014, the event moved to a street circuit in Manila, Philippines, which hosted the event until 2016. Shell Eco-marathon Asia then moved to Singapore at the Make the Future Festival from 2017 to 2018.  This 2019, in its 10th year, Shell Eco-marathon Asia returns to the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at Make the Future Live Malaysia.
