Sarawak Shell Berhad concluded the Kota Samarahan leg of the 2014 Shell Traffic Games (STG) today, involving more than 350 students from 22 schools from the division.
The programme is organised in every division in Sarawak and culminates in a state level final in which the winning schools from each division participate. This is scheduled to be held in Kuching next week. State level champions go on to represent Sarawak at the national level finals, competing against other states.
Officiating at the event was Samarahan Resident, Abdul Rahman Sebli Sanusi.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Shell Malaysia upstream communications senior manager, Peing Tajang said Shell had been working with its partners to create a greater awareness of road safety amongst the young people who participated in the programme.
She said, “As a continued partner in Sarawak’s progress, Shell will continue to invest significantly in a wide range of corporate social responsibility or social investment initiatives here, especially in the areas of health, safety and the environment, capacity building, education, community welfare and arts and culture.”
Shell had invested in STG for over five decades to inculcate and nurture road safety awareness in young, aiming at reducing accidents and fatalities by raising awareness on road safety in participants who come from schools all over Malaysia.
Peing said that while Shell was proud to have educated tens of thousands of young children on road safety since it was launched in 1963 in Sarawak, the company would look at ways to improve its road safety targets for the community including exploring newer and more modern programmes.
In their quest for continuous improvement and relevancy, Shell decided to assess its effectiveness and relevancy last year. “We are now looking at the suggested recommendations and considering applying it in stages” she added.
Peing said, “As a responsible energy provider, we believe we have a role to play in advocating road safety in our community and keeping our roads safe. We need to instil road safety awareness among our society and develop into a culture.”
SMK Pasentren Abd Taib Mahmud won the secondary school category while SJK Chung Hua Serian emerged as champion for the primary school category. Both schools will represent the Samarahan division in the Sarawak state level finals in Kuching on 11 October.
