KOTA KINABALU, Friday, 13 July 2018 - Submissions for the Kinabalu Shell Press Awards (KSPA) is now open and would be for the first time extended to online media registered with the Information Department in Sabah and Labuan.

Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) president Muguntan Vanar, who is also the KSPA organising committee chairman, said the committee decided to open the event for online news portals to recognise their contributions to the reporting fraternity.

"The online reporters have been contributing towards the growth of journalism and we believe it will help spur both the print and online journalists to excel in their reporting in this fast changing world of journalism," he said.

Besides this, he said the committee had also decided that chief editors, deputy chief editors and news editors to be ineligible to enter their submissions for the competition starting this year.

"We have taken into account various views and have decided to keep the competition strictly among all journalists working in Sabah and Labuan with the exception of chief editors, deputy chief editors and news editors.

"This is because we want to encourage especially the young who have joined the industry to vie for recognition on a level playing field without having to worry about outdoing their senior colleagues," Vanar said.

Meanwhile, he also said Category 9 of the KSPA has been renamed "Entertainment, Culture and Arts Reporting Award" to enable journalists to send in stories on culture and arts as opposed to reports on entertainment alone only previously.

Journalists, photographers and producers from the print and electronic media in Sabah and Labuan can submit entries for the 2018 Kinabalu Shell Press Awards starting today until the closing date for submission on July 27, 2018.

The much-awaited journalism awards event in Sabah and Labuan will be held in November this year here, with the Sabah Chief Minister expected to be the Guest-of-Honour.

The KSPA is a tripartite partnership between the Sabah State Government, Shell Malaysia and the SJA, aimed at recognising journalistic excellence and to further enhance the standard of journalism in the state and Labuan.

Only works published in newspaper dailies or electronic media between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017 are eligible for submission.

All entries are to be addressed to the: Secretariat, Shell Malaysia External Relations, C/o Sabah Shell Petroleum Co. Ltd., Level 9, Plaza Shell, 29 Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, 88000 Kota Kinabalu (Attn: Johnny Gaban).

Entry forms and rules and regulations can also be obtained from the Shell Malaysia website: https://www.shell.com.my/ by July 16 (Monday) or respective media organisations/associations in Sabah and Labuan.
