Kuala Lumpur, Shell Malaysia, once again marked how safety was part of its DNA when it awarded its business partners and contractors for their exemplary leadership and performance in the Health, Safety, Security and Environment (“HSSE”) standards, at the 6th Shell Malaysia Safety Awards (SMSA) held recently.

The Shell Malaysia Safety Awards is an annual event conducted by Shell to award its partners and contractors for their exemplary safety performance and the effort in emphasising safety culture.

Over 250 guests encompassing Shell’s business partners and contractors joined the celebration at the SMSA Gala Dinner hosted by Datuk Iain Lo, Chairman of Shell Malaysia.

“I am proud of this event which is growing from strength to strength with the continuous support from our contractors and partners, but most importantly, in their commitment and dedication towards upholding the ‘Goal Zero – No Harm, No Leaks’ safety principal,” expressed Lo during his welcoming speech.

He further added that what inspired him most is the way these leaders have tackled challenging safety dilemmas by empowering their people to speak up and helping them make safer choices at all times by adopting a healthy and safe culture in their organisations.

The Shell Malaysia Safety Awards is divided into two segments comprising the Safety Awards and Merit Awards. For Safety Awards, there are three categories – Upstream, Downstream and Integrated Gas, and Corporate. – with three awards for each category: Gold, Silver and Bronze. Special merit awards are also presented under the categories of Health, Environment and Most Improved.

This year, under the merit awards, a category called the ‘Sustained Performance Merit Award’ was introduced. This award recognises contractors who are sustaining a proactive or generative HSE culture and delivering outstanding performance each year. The winner for this year was Konsortium PD Sdn Bhd (KPD).

“Thank you, Shell Malaysia, for honouring us with the Sustained Performance Merit Award. It is truly inspiring, motivating and this award reinforces KPD as a group to go an extra mile and set a high standard the industry in terms of HSSE and Operational Excellence,” said Richard Tee, Managing Director of Konsortium PD.

“It’s such a great honour to receive this award from Shell because Shell is a company we look up to in safety and for Shell to recognise us, it is an amazing thing! So, we are thankful to Shell. One thing I would say is that safety doesn’t take second place, it always has to be the main priority. We should never ever be complacent on safety. That is what I always say to everyone else. At Schlumberger, we always put safety at the top and we always care for our employees,” shared James Daniel, Malaysia Account Manager of Schlumberger (M) Sdn. Bhd.

The SMSA was later followed by the 12th Shell Malaysia and Safety Partner Organisations’ CEO HSSE Forum held at Aloft Hotel Kuala Lumpur on 18th July 2019, where Shell Malaysia together with its business partners and contractors came together to have a deeper conversation around the topic of Care, Dilemmas and Risk Normalisation, which is consistent with Shell’s global Safety Day theme for 2019.
